Semester 2 Master of Epidemiology students at Diponegoro University (Undip) held a field study activity aimed at identifying and overcoming leptospirosis cases in Gebang Village, Bonang District, Demak Regency on June 15-16, 2023. This study is part of an effort to improve their knowledge and skills in understanding and overcoming public health problems in the field.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by Leptospira bacteria, which is usually spread through water contaminated by the urine of infected animals. The disease can cause serious symptoms in humans, including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and in more severe cases, kidney and liver disorders. Gebang village was chosen as the location for the field study due to the high potential for the spread of the disease, especially due to the large number of agricultural activities and human contact with livestock.

Undip’s team of epidemiology students conducted various activities as part of this field study, including population surveys, water sampling, and examination of livestock to identify potential sources of leptospirosis transmission. In addition, they also conducted socialization to local cadres on preventive measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing the disease.

Head of the Undip Master of Epidemiology Study Program, Dr. drh. Dwi Sutiningsih revealed “This field practice activity is also part of Undip’s commitment to contribute to improving the welfare of the community. Through this collaboration, we hope to have a significant positive impact on public health in Gebang Village.”

This field study is expected to provide information for local health authorities and assist in designing more effective leptospirosis prevention programs in the future. Undip Master of Epidemiology students have shown their dedication in carrying out this activity and hope to help reduce the disease burden of leptospirosis in Gebang Village, Demak Regency.
