The background is the more frequent occurrence of extreme drought in Indonesia which is the impact of uncontrolled global warming, as well as the mission of the Undip Postgraduate School to provide high-quality community services as an effort to apply and develop science and technology with the aim of meeting people’s needs. Undip Postgraduate School conducts the activity “Water Protection Movement (Gempar) Laskap Selatan Mount Merbabu”. The Southern Landscape of Mount Merbabu was chosen because the area is one of the areas that always faces drought during the dry season.
The series of “Gempar” activities with the core of planting 15,000 plant seeds and making Biopori were carried out aimed at restoring the quantity and quality of water for the people of the Southern Landscape of Mount Merbabu. This activity involves various elements, both the Regional Government at the Provincial level to the Village level as well as the community who are members of non-governmental organizations to jointly make efforts to improve the quality and quantity of water in the area.
The activity began with a talkshow on TVRI Central Java and Radio Idola which aimed to campaign for the activities of the Undip Postgraduate School for Environmental and Health Care: “Water Protection Movement (Gempar) Southern Landscape of Mount Merbabu”. In this talkshow session, many discussed the background of the Undip Postgraduate School in carrying out community service activities regarding the environment and health and how the Undip Postgraduate School’s contribution in reducing the impact of global warming for humans.
The activity continued with the distribution of 15,000 plant seeds to the community in Jetak Village, Getasan District, Semarang Regency. These seeds are supported by the Environment and Forestry Service of Central Java Province. There are at least 1,600 families from 11 hamlets in Jetak Village who are involved in the planting activity. At the ceremonial session, symbolic planting was carried out on January 24, 2020 in the Jetak Village field, Getasan District, Semarang Regency which is also around the Jetak Village Hall office. In this activity, at least 300 plants had been planted, consisting of fruit plants and conditioning plants. The planting activity was carried out by all participants consisting of elements from the government, elements of community leaders, elements of environmentalists and elements of the community who love the environment. This ceremonial activity is a closing activity for tree planting in the southern area of the Mount Merbabu landscape.

As an effort to maintain the sustainability of the program, the “Undip Postgraduate School Cares for the Environment and Health” program will be internalized in various social activities in the community by developing a volunteer cadre system that cares for the environment and health. Each volunteer cadre will receive assistance and capacity building training related to the environment and health which is simultaneously supported by the Undip Postgraduate School Community and various parties who focus on environmental issues. With the community movement to protect the catchment and water catchment areas, it is hoped that within the next five years the community’s water needs in the Southern Merbabu Landscape area can be fulfilled.
